Let’s start with the basics…what is CBD? For over 10,000 years humans have been cultivating the multiple plants that make up the cannabis family. The plants produce active compounds called cannabinoids. There are different types of cannabinoids, each of which can generate different benefits and responses. You have likely heard of the two most well-known, CBD which is derived from the hemp plant and THC which is derived from the marijuana plant. Let’s dig in here for a bit.
So what is THC? Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has psychoactive and intoxicating properties, typically marijuana has between 5-35 percent THC. This is what can cause someone to feel euphoric, or “high.” Hemp generally has a 0.3 percent or lower levels of THC, which is why CBD DOES NOT produce psychoactive or intoxicating effects. Instead, CBD is known for its ability to heal, calm and bring about restorative effects.
Let’s talk legalities since that should also be on anyone's mind when considering whether to try CBD…in normal speak! The legalese: with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, the FDA stated that hemp is no longer an illegal substance under federal law. The Farm Bill defines “hemp” as any part of derivative of the Cannabis sativa L. plant containing less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by weight. This bill is the first piece of federal legislation legalizing hemp and removing its Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Schedule I controlled substance designation. In plain language, it opened the door for states to legalize hemp farming and products. Texas, where our flagship store is located, passed House Bill 1325 which legalized the production and sale of hemp-based products that fall within the 0.3 percent or under THC range.
